I found a short but fascinating article that bears on sculpting and painting Ice, Snow, and Icebergs. Here is the link:

http://www.tourismontheedge.com/places/striped-antarctic-icebergs-anyone.html

It has pictures of ice formations that are strange and bizarre looking. Including one with a texture I used to regard as unrealistic. But, wait a minute, I need to rethink this --- all the way to spot-on accurate.

This is the picture:

That texture of narrowly carved verticals is one I have seen many times. It is what happens when a rookie, with a hot wire foam cutter, wiggles the wire in a zig-zag fashion against the edge of the foam for a first try.

A bunch of narrow, thin, vertical ridges. I have seen foam carved like that dozens of times.

I have tried to avoid it and do better. But, melting water will do what it likes. Who knew?

Another thing I have steered away from is using lots of deep blue paint on ice. Like this:

This was from a related article about ice waves on the same website. There is a lot of 'blue paint' in this pic.
And, white streaks within and criss-crossing the blue. With snow and frost on top of it all.

(And also, something strange happened that makes it look like a wave froze; there's that too.)

Hopefully this thread can be about collecting inspiration and techniques for creating all things frozen.
That first image looks a lot like blue insulation foam that's been hit with a hot wire cutter. Tongue

Oh good. It's not just me seeing it.  Shy
I'm seeing a seal sitting on the top as well... really?

I think it is just ice all the way to the top.  Now you mention it, I see the seal shape.  But I have seen clouds that look like dragons;  nebula that look like angels....
...mashed potatoes that look like Nelson Rockefeller...

Does anyone else see a Wolf or a Malamute?

This is an Ice Fumarole...Mt. Erebus, wherever that is.

So, nevermind Seals and Wolves, how about an Axebeak?

It's in Antarctica.

Very cool picture, both literally and figuratively.
Found this one while searching the webs for furniture replacement parts...(don't ask):

The caption said it was somewhere in Russia  Siberia. (I doublechecked.) It was on a Pinterest page (which I refuse to link to).

This was the caption:
Quote:Giant rock surrounded by cracked ice of Lake Baikal, Siberia. Lake Baikal has some of the cleanest, purest water on earth. It's the biggest lake on earth. It holds 20% of the worlds fresh water. Holding more water than all the Great Lakes combined. It is more than a mile deep, or 1,700 meters deep (1.7 kilometers). Deepest lake on earth. It sits cupped at the crux of three different tectonic plates.

No idea how true all of that is.
